The Observation Saloon is an exclusive carriage with large panoramic windows, available on select express trains (e.g., 8058 Ruhunu Kumari). It offers the best coastal views – perfect for photographers and sightseers. Seats are comfortable and reserved. Book at least 2 weeks in advance.
First class on trains like Rajarata Rejini (8086), Sagarika (8096), and Samudra Devi (8760) offers air‑conditioned compartments with reclining seats. It’s quiet and comfortable – great for those who want to escape the heat. Book 1‑2 weeks ahead.
Second class is available on all trains. Reserved 2nd class on expresses (8060, 8054, 8058) gives you a guaranteed seat and open windows for ocean breezes. Unreserved 2nd class is cheaper but can be crowded. We strongly recommend reserved 2nd class, especially on weekends.
Third class is cheap but unreserved and often packed, especially on commuter trains. For a short 1‑hour journey, it might be bearable on a tight budget, but we recommend spending a little more for 2nd class reserved. Avoid 3rd class on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
For the fastest journey (57 minutes), take 8060 (06:10), 8054 (15:10) or 8058 (15:50). For the most scenic experience, choose an afternoon train when the sun lights up the ocean. Book tickets online at least 1 week in advance for express trains.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat. Always choose reserved for 1st class, Observation, or 2nd class on expresses.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand. Only use for off‑peak travel on commuter trains.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes early for express trains. The journey is short, so pack only essentials: water, sunscreen, camera. The left side (west) offers the best ocean views.
Aluthgama bus stand is 500 m from the railway station – a 5‑min walk. Buses run to Bentota, Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Colombo.
