The train journey from Colombo Fort to Ambewela takes you deep into Sri Lanka’s central highlands, covering 221.5 kilometers. Ambewela, often called “Little New Zealand,” is a stunning highland region known for its rolling green pastures, dairy farms, and cool climate. The train ride, lasting about 7 to 8 hours, is one of the most scenic in the country, passing through tea plantations, waterfalls, and misty mountains.
With only 29 weekly trains, this route is less frequent than coastal lines, so planning ahead is essential. Most services are express or intercity, with one overnight option. Whether you’re visiting Ambewela for its famous farm, the nearby Pattipola station (the highest in Sri Lanka), or simply to escape the heat, this guide will help you navigate the schedule and enjoy a memorable hill country journey.
Distance: 221.5 km. Approximately 29 weekly trains (5 daily services on most days, plus a Thursday special).

First class air‑conditioned compartments are available on Podi Menike (1005), Udarata Menike (1015), and the Thursday Special (Train 1). These offer comfortable reclining seats, large windows (sealed), and a quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a long journey of 7‑8 hours, but the sealed windows limit photography. Book at least 3‑4 weeks in advance – these trains are very popular among tourists heading to Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
Second class is available on all day trains (Podi Menike, Udarata Menike, 1007, and Special). Reserved 2nd class is the best choice for views and photography because windows are open. You can sit by the doorway and feel the cool hill country breeze. 1007 (Express) has only 1st and 2nd class (no 3rd). We strongly recommend reserving a seat – unreserved 2nd class may be available but you risk standing for hours. Night Mail has 2nd class but most of the journey is in darkness.
Third class is available only on Podi Menike, Udarata Menike, and Night Mail. For a 7‑8 hour journey, 3rd class wooden benches are extremely uncomfortable, and carriages can be very crowded, especially near Kandy and Badulla. Avoid 3rd class for Colombo–Ambewela unless you have no other option. The small saving is not worth the discomfort.
For the best daylight scenery and comfortable seating, take Udarata Menike (08:30) – it’s the fastest (6h 37m) and offers excellent hill country views after Kandy. Podi Menike (05:55) is also great, with the advantage of early morning light through the tea plantations. The optimal side for this route (Colombo → Ambewela) is the right side after Kandy. You’ll see the Kadugannawa tunnel, tea estates, and the highest station at Pattipola.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (ESSENTIAL): Reserved tickets provide guaranteed seating for this long journey. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class. Do not rely on unreserved tickets – you will likely stand for hours.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand or sit on a wooden bench for 7‑8 hours. Only suitable for extreme budget travellers who don't mind severe discomfort.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 1 hour before departure – this is a long journey, and you’ll want to find your platform and settle in. The station has food stalls, but it’s wise to pack your own snacks, water, and a power bank. The weather in Ambewela is cold (10‑15°C even during the day), so bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves – you’ll feel the temperature drop after Kandy.
Ambewela does not have a large bus stand, but buses stop on the main A5 road (Welimada – Nuwara Eliya road) about 500 m from the station. Buses run to Nuwara Eliya (30 min), Pattipola, and Bandarawela.

If you overshoot Ambewela, the next station is Ohiya (10 km away). From there, take a train back to Ambewela – trains run several times daily.
If you miss Ambewela, get off at Ohiya and take the next train back to Colombo – services run daily. Return journey takes about 7‑8 hours. Alternatively, take a bus from Ambewela main road to Nuwara Eliya, then a bus to Colombo (9‑10 hours). Inform the train conductor immediately if you miss your stop.
