Journey Guidance For Colombo To Andadola

Practical, route-specific planning notes are kept visible for every journey.

Colombo To Andadola Journey Overview +

Colombo to Andadola Train Fares (2026)

ClassApprox. Price (LKR)Approx. Price (USD)
1st Class (Samudra Devi only) 1200-1800 $3.70-$5.55
2nd Class (Reserved recommended) 300-500 $0.90-$1.55
3rd Class (NOT recommended) 150-250 $0.45-$0.75

*3rd class is unreserved and can be crowded – avoid on Night Mail if you want to sleep. No 1st class on 8764 or Night Mail.

Choose Your Class: First, Second, And Third Class +

1st Class – Only On Samudra Devi (8760)

Samudra Devi offers 1st class air‑conditioned compartments with comfortable reclining seats, large windows, and a quiet atmosphere. This train runs on weekdays (Mon‑Fri, except Sat/Sun). It’s the fastest option (1h 42m) and ideal if you value comfort. Book at least 1‑2 weeks in advance, as seats are limited.

2nd Class – Best Value (Reserved Recommended)

Second class is available on all three trains. Samudra Devi has reserved 2nd class; 8764 and Night Mail have both reserved and unreserved. We strongly recommend reserving a seat for evening trains (17:30‑19:30) as they can be busy with long‑distance travelers. Night Mail’s 2nd class is cheaper but most of the journey is in darkness.

3rd Class – NOT RECOMMENDED For This Route

Third class is available on 8764 (Commuter) and Night Mail. Seats are wooden benches, and carriages can be crowded, especially on Friday evenings. For a 2‑hour journey, 3rd class is acceptable if you’re on a tight budget. Avoid 3rd class on Night Mail if you want a good sleep – it’s noisy and crowded.

Plan Your Journey Upfront +

For the fastest and most comfortable journey, take Samudra Devi (17:30) – it’s the quickest and offers 1st class. For a budget daytime option, 8764 (17:35) is fine but slower. The route runs through flat, agricultural land with paddy fields and coconut plantations. The best views are on the right side (east) as you head north, where you’ll see traditional villages and small lakes.

Reserved Vs Unreserved Ticket +

Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 2‑hour journey. Always choose reserved for Samudra Devi and for evening commuter trains.

Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand. Only use for off‑peak travel on a tight budget.

Plan Your Departure From Colombo Fort +

Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 30‑45 minutes early, especially for the 17:30 and 17:35 trains when the station is busy with commuters. The station has basic food stalls and restrooms. Since the journey is short (1.5‑2.5 hours), pack water and a light snack. For Night Mail, bring a jacket – it can get cool.

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Arrive at Colombo Fort station 45 minutes before your train.
  • Carry printed or digital ticket (screenshot).
  • Pack a light jacket for Night Mail – evening breezes can be cool.
  • Bring water and snacks – vendors are scarce on this route.
  • Power bank for your phone – no charging points.
  • Mosquito repellent – rural stations can have insects.
