More about this journey
These notes were carried forward from the original guide. Confirm operational details before travel.
1st Class – Only on Samudra Devi (8760)
Samudra Devi offers 1st class air‑conditioned compartments with comfortable reclining seats, large windows, and a quiet atmosphere. This train runs on weekdays (Mon‑Fri, except Sat/Sun). It’s the fastest option (1h 42m) and ideal if you value comfort. Book at least 1‑2 weeks in advance, as seats are limited.
2nd Class – Best Value (Reserved recommended)
Second class is available on all three trains. Samudra Devi has reserved 2nd class; 8764 and Night Mail have both reserved and unreserved. We strongly recommend reserving a seat for evening trains (17:30‑19:30) as they can be busy with long‑distance travelers. Night Mail’s 2nd class is cheaper but most of the journey is in darkness.
3rd Class – NOT RECOMMENDED for this route
Third class is available on 8764 (Commuter) and Night Mail. Seats are wooden benches, and carriages can be crowded, especially on Friday evenings. For a 2‑hour journey, 3rd class is acceptable if you’re on a tight budget. Avoid 3rd class on Night Mail if you want a good sleep – it’s noisy and crowded.
Plan Your Journey Upfront
For the fastest and most comfortable journey, take Samudra Devi (17:30) – it’s the quickest and offers 1st class. For a budget daytime option, 8764 (17:35) is fine but slower. The route runs through flat, agricultural land with paddy fields and coconut plantations. The best views are on the right side (east) as you head north, where you’ll see traditional villages and small lakes.
