More about this journey

These notes were carried forward from the original guide. Confirm operational details before travel.

2nd Class – Recommended (Reserved available)

Second class is available on all eight trains. We strongly recommend reserving a seat for afternoon trains (16:00‑18:30) as they can be busy with commuters. Train 9254 (08:30) is the only morning train – a good choice for a daytime trip.

3rd Class – NOT RECOMMENDED during peak hours

Third class is available on all trains but is unreserved. For a 1.5‑2 hour journey, 3rd class is acceptable if you're on a tight budget and travel off‑peak. Avoid 3rd class on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings when many people travel.

Plan Your Journey Upfront

For daytime travel, take 9254 (08:30) – the only morning train. For evening departures, 9262 (16:25) and 9269 (18:30) are reliable. The best views are on the right side (east) as you head away from Colombo, where you'll see rubber plantations and paddy fields along the Kelani River.

Reserved vs Unreserved Ticket

Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 1.5‑2 hour journey. Always choose reserved 2nd class if travelling during peak commuter hours.

Unreserved Tickets – OK for off‑peak travel: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand. Only use for off‑peak travel on a tight budget.
