First class air‑conditioned compartments are available on Sagarika (8096) and Rajarata Rejini (8086). These offer comfortable reclining seats, large windows, and a quiet atmosphere. Sagarika is the fastest train on this route (3h53m). Book at least 1‑2 weeks in advance.
Second class is available on all trains. Reserved 2nd class on Sagarika, Rajarata Rejini, and Galu Kumari (8056) is comfortable with open windows – perfect for coastal views. Unreserved 2nd class can be crowded; we strongly recommend reserving a seat.
Third class is available on 8050 and 8056. For a 4‑5 hour journey, 3rd class wooden benches are very uncomfortable, and carriages are often overcrowded. Avoid unless you are an extreme budget traveler.
For the fastest journey, take Sagarika (8096) at 16:20 – 3h53m. For a morning departure, Rajarata Rejini (8086) at 10:30 is a good choice (4h30m). The best coastal views are on the left side (west/south) throughout the journey. After Galle, the train reverses direction but continues south – you do not need to change trains.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 4‑hour journey. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand or sit on a wooden bench. Only suitable for extreme budget travel.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 45‑60 minutes early for express trains. Pack water, snacks, and a power bank – the journey is 4‑5 hours. The coastal sun is strong, so bring a hat and sunglasses.
Beliatta itself is a small transport hub. Most visitors stay in nearby beach towns. Here are the best options:
| Months | Weather | Activities | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Mar | Dry, sunny, 26‑30°C | Beach, swimming, surfing | Best beach weather | Peak season, crowded trains |
| Apr–May | Hot, occasional showers | Sightseeing | Fewer tourists | Afternoon heat |
| Jun–Sep | Southwest monsoon, rain | Indoor activities | Low season, cheap hotels | Frequent rain, rough seas |
| Oct–Nov | Inter‑monsoon, mixed | Sightseeing | Green scenery | Unpredictable showers |
Tip: The best time for surfing at Hiriketiya is December‑March. For whale watching in Mirissa (nearby), November‑April is ideal.
Major stops: Colombo Fort → Mount Lavinia → Kalutara South → Aluthgama → Ambalangoda → Hikkaduwa → Galle → Weligama → Matara → Beliatta.
At Galle station, the train reverses direction – you stay on the same train. If you overshoot Beliatta, the next station is at the end of the line (Matara area), so take a train or bus back.
If you miss Beliatta, get off at the next station (Matara is just a few km away) and take a train back. Return to Colombo takes about 4‑5 hours. Alternatively, take a bus from Beliatta bus stand to Colombo (3‑4 hours).
