First class air‑conditioned compartments are available on 4021 and 4017 (AC Intercity). These offer comfortable reclining seats, large windows (sealed), and a quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a long journey of 6‑7 hours. Book at least 2‑3 weeks in advance – these sell out quickly.
Second class is available on all trains. Reserved 2nd class on Yal Devi (4077) and Uttara Devi (4017) offers comfortable seating with open windows – ideal for enjoying the rural scenery. Unreserved 2nd class can be crowded. We strongly recommend reserving a seat for this 6‑9 hour journey.
Third class is available on Yal Devi, 4093 and Night Mail. For a 6‑9 hour journey, 3rd class wooden benches are extremely uncomfortable, and carriages are often overcrowded. Avoid 3rd class for Colombo–Jaffna unless you are an extreme budget traveler. The small saving is not worth the discomfort.
For the fastest journey, take AC Intercity 4021 (05:45) – only 6h 6m. For a comfortable daytime ride with open windows, Yal Devi (06:35) is a classic choice. For those wanting to save on accommodation, Night Mail (20:30) is a budget option, but you'll miss the scenery. The best views are on the left side (east) as you head north – you'll see paddy fields, ancient tanks, and rural villages, especially after Vavuniya.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (ESSENTIAL): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 6‑9 hour journey. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class – unreserved tickets guarantee discomfort.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand or sit on a wooden bench for 6‑9 hours. Only suitable for extreme budget travellers who don't mind severe discomfort.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 1 hour early for this long journey. Pack plenty of water, snacks, and a power bank – the journey is 6‑9 hours. The dry zone can be hot, so bring a hat and sunscreen. For AC trains, a light jacket is useful as air conditioning can be strong.
Jaffna Railway Station, the largest in the city, is a historic and architecturally significant transport hub connecting Jaffna to other parts of Sri Lanka. Its design is reminiscent of British colonial architecture and offers a variety of amenities to passengers. Following the end of the civil war, the station underwent substantial reconstruction and refurbishment.
Jaffna Bus Stand is about 500 m from the railway station – a 5‑10 min walk or 2 min tuk‑tuk (100‑150 LKR). Buses run to all parts of the peninsula.
